Message for WebCT Designers

As you probably already know, Blackboard has purchased WebCT and the Campus Edition version we have been using the past few years is being discontinued. Between April and July this year the LMS Selection Committees reviewed four leading vendors and after extensive analysis and discussion provided their unanimous recommendation. On Sept. 6th, the Board of Trustees approved the recommendation to license Desire2Learn (D2L) as the new Learning Management System at The University of Akron.

Moving to a new more powerful Learning Management System is a tremendous opportunity to expand your online teaching skills with new tools and enhance your online learning environments. This will be an exciting change!

We also understand that during this time of transition there will be questions and concerns. We want you to know that we are here to support you in multiple ways to make this migration as easy as possible. We value each and every one of you and your commitment to integrating a LMS into your teaching practice.

The overwhelming request from faculty has been – “How soon can I get my hands on the new LMS?” We plan to ensure that every course offered in Spring 2008 has a course shell on Desire2Learn. Between now and Thanksgiving we will work with the approximately 900 owners of WebCT course sites that will need to migrated into new sites on D2L.

We encourage you to take advantage of the different formats for training identified elsewhere on this website.

Lastly, we are in this together and we will succeed together. Help yourself to the available training. Become a resource for your colleagues teaching in your programs, departments and colleges. Let us know when where and how we can best assist you and we will keep you informed and involved as this project unfolds.
