Revisiting Race: Black, White and Beyond

The Coming Together ProjectThe Coming Together Project in Akron is what prompted a visit by President Bill Clinton in 1997.  The Coming Together Project began in 1993 after a Pulitzer-Prize winning series in the Akron Beacon Journal on race relations, A Question of Color.   The project sponsors workshops, forums, as well as theatrical and musical events designed to raise awareness of Akron’s diversity, beyond black and white.  The group has sponsored overseas missions to Africa, walks and attendance at city events such as the Akron Aeros baseball game.  The Coming Together Project features both private and corporate membership.  Currently, the Coming Together Project is considering disbanding.  The records of the group are housed at the Akron Public Library.
